I was gratified to hear that Hugo was paid by the word to write that book. Surely he didn't think it needed all those
tangents.
Definitely read an abridged version. I've read the unabridged, just to say I did, but I would never read it that way again or recommend it to someone unless they really want that experience for some reason.
