I use a stereo receiver and two speakers + subwoofer from D.I.
It's not audiophile quality but works fine, including dialogue. I just run a line from the TV's headphone jack to the receiver's RCA inputs. Total setup was about $10 for the receiver, $15 for the speakers, $12 for the sub.

On another TV I have a nicer A/V receiver and that improves things quite a bit. But if you have a free or nearly free option for a 2-speaker setup I'd say give it a try and see if it's good enough. You could even try one of those cheap Logitech sets with two small speakers and sub.
