Except BYU hasn't been the pass happy offense of the 70's and 80's for years
Vai is also implying that BYU has not had a great QB or prolific passing attack since the 80's which is absolute rubbish. I guess Detmer who played in the 90's didn't get that memo. It is true that that "golden age" of BYU QBs has come and gone but BYU is still a place that attracts quality QBs and that should never change. I don't think we necessarily need to innovate and come up with some fancy new offense nobody has seen before. We just have to find and successfully execute an offense that works for who BYU is today.

When Detmer was first hired, he made an interesting point about BYU's past success in offense. From what he observed, BYU's success was really in large part due to the ability of the offense to find and exploit mismatches with an opposing defense. If BYU is to be successful again on offense, they have to have an offense that puts players in position to do that.
