That tradition stems from E. King Gill, who was a former player but no longer on

the team. When the team started losing too many players to injury, Gill was asked to suit up in case they needed him. He did not play, but the 12th man signifies that students stand ready to support the team.

The yell leaders (a WAY better tradition than silly female cheerleaders with no clue of the game), came over a decade prior. That's why I was confused.
