...and a few of the guys will learn that we don’t need heroes or guys to load the team up on their backs and instead continue to work towards being more disciplined on offense to share the ball to the open shooters.

I didn’t get to see this game but in the UTA game and the Princeton game we had guys do a good job breaking down the D with penetration but once they drew help defenders instead of kicking it out to the open shooter in the corner we had both Bryant and Haws trying to force up difficult off-balanced shots over bigger defenders (through contact).

If we want to turn the corner with this team we need (primarily Haws and Bryant) to get more disciplined with their decision making. If they’re going to be primary ball handlers they have to do a better job sharing the ball. There’s no reason we can’t get thirty 3 pt shots a game as a team. In our first game vs MVSU, we did a really nice job making the extra pass and Bryant was pretty disciplined about getting to the corner (iirc he hit 6 of 7 from 3) and none of his shots were forced, they were all wide open.

There seems to be a lingering mentality with Bryant and Haws that if we’re feeling pressed by an opposing team they start trying to do too much individually. Several times in the loss to UTA and the close win over Princeton Haws and Bryant tried to finish difficult shots through contact in traffic when they had Seljaas wide open in the corner with nobody within 15 ft of him.

For us to turn the corner offensively against good teams, That extra pass HAS to be automatic, especially with how good of a shooter he is. Also in lineups where Hardnett is on the floor we need to be more disciplined to get Haws and Bryant in the corner for kickout passes (like we did with Bryant in the MVSU game).

Until we reach that level of discipline we’ll continue to be a 3rd place WCC team.
