I am sure "employers" understand. In my industry firms recruit people out of their firm and allow them play out contracts to keep equity/carry/deferred comp vs paying them out.

Not a lazy mans way out simply industry standard. Not sure why employers would judge him, but may not want to pay up to make him whole.
