Just because the company that hired him says he is an independent contractor
doesn't mean that the state agrees. Usually states will have a 5 or so point test to determine if someone is truly an independent contractor or employee. If he isn't an independent contractor in the eyes of the state, the company that hired him would be responsible for wc benefits.
