I've had a couple of horrible Thanksgiving experiences with pie.
First thanksgiving with my wife's family. She had an uncle who is diabetic. All the pies had whole wheat crust and were sugar free. As was the cream. Ick.

I was with my extended family having a HUGE thanksgiving dinner once. I had a piece of pumpkin pie, but there hadn't been any whipping cream when they were handing out the pies. So a minute later my crazy uncle comes by with a big bowl of whipping cream and asking who needs some. Yeah - I had a brain fart and forgot who I was talking to and told him I needed some. Took a bite - and it was N A S T Y. Super nasty. Quickly learned it was cream from his goats, and he hadn't bothered to put any vanilla or sugar in it.

Now - any time thanksgiving dinner is with anyone I'm uncertain about, my wife knows that we need to have pie at home...just in case.
