While it's not exactly the same because the U does not represent the Church, among faithful LDS Ute fans there is great pride in quality young men who share similar traits--hence, I believe, the intense pride and loyalty toward players like Weddle, Scalley, etc. Many of us share a lot more than the rivalry sometimes lets us recognize.
