He fell into a lake in Switzerland and lived. He swam across the lake upon impact. Evaded capture since the Swiss were detaining Americans. Made back through occupied territory and back all the way to American lines.

He became a well-known test pilot in the late 40s and created the first Air Commando units in Vietnam.
