My maternal grandpa was enlisted and went to camp right after marrying

Spent years in Europe, including time as a prisoner captured by the Germans. He was generally not in a direct line of fire/danger, because he was a radio caller that helped those launching bombs from the ground to calibrate and hit their targets.

He volunteered for Korean with 2 young ones at home.
