But right now they're in an advantageous position, and don't want to give that up
Let's compare two schools. And not BYU because BYU is frankly unique, but Utah because we all know them.

Utah is the flagship state school in a state with 3.4M people, though with a strong in-state challenger. The program is known for tough defense and quality special teams with middling to poor offense. The head coach has been with them for 30 years and has hired family members into staff. Over the last decade, the team averages schedule-adjusted 8.46 wins and a Viewership Score of 1.32M per game. Since 1990 they've gone to 4 NY6 Bowls, winning 2 and losing 2 (including 2 Rose Bowls)

Iowa is the flagship state school in a state with 3.2M people, though with a strong in-state challenger. The program is known for tough defense and quality special teams with middling to poor offense. The head coach has been with them for 25 years and has hired family members into staff. Over the last decade, the team averages schedule-adjusted 8.71 wins and a Viewership Score of 1.55M per game. Since 1990, they've gone to 4 NY6 Bowls, winning 1 and losing 3 (including 2 Rose Bowls)

For the last 30 years, those two are extremely similar. But if anyone is looking to create a Superleague, Iowa is very clearly and absolutely ahead of Utah. Part of that is history from 30+ years ago...but a big part of it is also that they're a proven commodity. Utah (fans, admin, Altimores) can argue all day that Utah would draw better numbers if they got to play Ohio St and Michigan. And that they could be a worthy second (or maybe third) tier B1G team, same as Iowa. But it requires projection, whereas Iowa has already proved it.

If you put other schools on equal footing with lesser B1G teams, it makes it easier for those schools to pass them in the pecking order. Utah/Iowa is the easiest, most relevant example to us as BYU fans...but the same applies to a lot of other examples. It's also the same reason Miami and Florida St are hating UCF being on the same tier as them now...because it gives UCF an opening. Maybe Utah and UCF don't take advantage...but why even give them the chance by dropping yourself into equal status with them to begin with
