We have always found water fountains reasonably close (within 5 minute walk) to our gate. We bring empty water bottles through security and then fill them up with drinking fountain water on the other side.

Sure it isn't ice cold, but it is wet and satisfies the "I'm thirsty" complaint.

We usually bring empty plastic water bottles for this, because kids will inevitably lose one or two along the way.
