RE: Zipper merge. What would you do in this situation.
There is a road by my house that I encounter occasionally during my commute. Essentially there is a T intersection at a light where everyone wants to go north. After the light it stays two lanes for about 150 yards. At that point the right lane turns into a right turn only lane.

The problem is there is another light about a mile up the road and that causes traffic to go bumper to bumper all the way back to the T intersection light. There are no other turn offs between these lights other than the right hand turn.

Obviously cars that want to turn right don’t encounter the same traffic as that lane clears pretty easily. But many cars will enter the right lane and then either sneak back over to the left or put their blinker on and come to a stand still in the right lane hoping some nice soul lets them over.

Now when they do that they piss off those turning right because they have to stop and wait.

I’m all for the zipper merge when a lane ends but when it turns into a right lane (and there’s signs that it’s right turn only) then you gotta get over soon so you don’t block the lane.

One of my New Year’s resolutions has been to be more kind while driving. I find my stress and anxiety get pretty high in traffic and it gets me into a bad mood. I come from the bottom of the T intersection and I get into the left most right turn lane (there are two right turn lanes). Turn when I can into the left lane and stay in traffic. I don’t race to the front like many cars do. It adds a good amount of time ~10 mins on a 30 min commute so a good portion of it.

But I just sit back and don’t worry about what others are doing to get ahead of me. I’ve even seen cars right behind me exit the left lane drive 15-20 cars up and then put their blinker on. It’s frustrating but I just let it go.

The road is allegedly scheduled to be expanded in 2026 but they need to move it up. The road rage I’ve seen on this stretch gets bad. Many people merging with out gaps, people in the right lane holding down the horn at a person stopped trying to go to the left, and people racing forward both trying to stop the right lane cars from entering and right lane cars trying to snipe a spot.
