Pope's BYU legacy - mixed regular seasons and repeated postseason chokes

Yes, Pope produced 3 very good regular seasons, years 1,2 and 5.  Years 3-4 were bad, especially year 4.

His postseason results were undeniably awful.  And I'm not just talking about 0 wins in March Madness.  It's a lot worse than that:

  • 2019-20 = Pope often gets a "postseason pass" from BYU fans on this year due to Covid cancelling the big dance, but often forget to mention that BYU failed miserably in the WCC tournament that year.  They were the #2 seed in the conference and had a double bye all the way to the semi's... and then proceeded to lose to 3 seed St. Mary's (who finished a full 2 games behind BYU in WCC standings) with an abysmal offensive showing, dropping the game 51-50 and failing to even reach the conference championship.

  • 2020-21 = 6 seed BYU was upset by 11 seed UCLA.  Yes, in hindsight this ended up being a tough draw as UCLA made a Cinderella run to the Final Four, but that doesn't change the fact that BYU was upset and thoroughly outplayed.  The Cougars lost 73-62 and were down double digits most of the game, it wasn't even a competitive upset.  Pope was down 68-54 with 2 minutes to play, the final score was closer than the actual game.  Don't get it twisted, we got dismantled by the Bruins.

  • 2021-22 = A disappointing regular season saw us in the NIT... and in the NIT Pope proceeded to lose in the quarterfinals by getting boat raced on our home floor by Washington State, 77-58.  WSU was up by 23 pts at the final 2:00 minute mark.  That was a very ugly loss, and it happened in the Marriott Center which made it far worse.

  • 2022-23 = A truly terrible regular season wherein BYU finished 19-15 overall and an embarrassing 7-9 in WCC play.  The season ended in the WCC tournament as BYU fell to St. Mary's 76-69.  St. Mary's thorougly dominated the first 25 minutes of this game, getting up by as much as 26 points.  BYU made a spirited comeback in the 2nd half but ultimately SMC was able to rally and hold off the Cougars.

  • 2023-24 = a great regular season that saw BYU surpass all expecations and finish #5 in the Big 12, only to have a truly terrible showing in March Madness, getting upset by the worst 11 seed in the big dance.  Bid stealing Duquesne was sub 100 in the NET all season until their Missouri Valley conference tournament run.  Pope was completely outcoached in this game as Duquesne bullied us off the line and we had no response.. as Duquesne's 6'7 bigs totally dominated in the paint as well.  To make matters worse, Duquesne was completely destroyed by Illinois in the round of 32.  This was a truly terrible loss, and one that will leave a bitter taste in my mouth for years to come.

There you have it. All 5 of Pope’s postseasons at BYU were bad. We'll see how Pope does in the postseason at Kentucky... if he fails as badly there as he did at BYU then he won't last more than 3 years there.
