Deland is close to lots of great nature places like Blue Springs and DeLeon Springs - some of our favorite places to visit as a family, it's beautiful out there. Haven't lived in Deland so can't comment on that specifically, but in general there's lots of good areas in Central Florida to live (along with several to avoid.)
