My first manager after I graduated from the Y told me something that
stuck with me. We were having the proverbial “where do you see yourself in 5 years?” discussion.
He told me that as a manager, if everyone in your group likes you, you probably aren’t doing your job.
I know that is a truism, but I’ve thought about it a lot and agree that sometimes our job isn’t to make everyone happy.
I don’t know Brian S., Tom H., Mark P., or anyone else that matters related to the BYU sports programs, but I don’t think any of them “fell” into their current positions.
I know none of them are perfect, but I’m pretty confident that they all are working to make BYU successful. I/we may not agree with everything they do but we also don’t have all the background information or constraints behind those decisions. I think to assume we do would be a little “arrogant”.
