If salt is getting into your water, your softener is malfunctioning.
The salt is used to recharge a bed of beads where sodium (Na) is exchanged for calcium or magneseum, forming compounds with the chlorine, and then those compounds are flushed down the drain.


The sodium is generally not at levels that are harmful, and softened water should never taste salty.
