testing and diagnosing. That sounds terrible to me but I guess some psychologists enjoy that. Some specialize in forensics others in neuropsychology. There is also counseling psychology that focuses more on wellness and they typically work at universities. There are lots of options.
Psychiatry is mainly prescribing meds. There is a huge need for psychiatrists. Often they spend little time with people to see as many patients as they can because the need is so great. Psychiatric nurse practioners and physician assistants are helping reduce the load but the need is still extremely high.
Both careers have plenty of demand and job security. Psychiatrists make pretty good money but most people choose something else in med school because the money isn't as good and the patients can be difficult.
