I was asked to plan a family reunion in Hawaii, looking for ideas
MIL wants to take the family to Hawaii before she and FIL are too old to hang out with grandkids doing outdoor things. I have the reputation in the family as being a great trip planner and so I’ve been tasked with figuring this out for next summer. I’m torn on what to do.

My wife and I have been thinking of taking our kids to Hawaii for a while now, but we were thinking of a double island trip. Oahu since my kids have never been there before and we wanted to do things like Pearl Harbor and the PCC, and maybe the big island since my son really likes volcanoes. On the big island I’d thought that we’d stay at a resort or similar and make a trip to the national park. A trip like that seems like it’s going to be tough with multiple families, youngest kid being just a couple years old (not mine).

So basically, I’m struggling with ideas. I know there’s lots of discussions on here about travel, but less about coordinating travel for a large group. So, I’ll take any ideas folks might have about planning a good family trip to Hawaii.

Deets: 8 adults, 6 kids ages 2-15 across 2 families. Budget of about $1400/person for activities, accommodations, and food. Planning for roughly a week (though that’s probably going to be driven cost, we’ll hang out until we’ve used up the budget). Each family is responsible to flying themselves there. No real big preference on islands. Kids are somewhat, but not overly adventurous. They’ll do hiking and swimming but probably don’t want to do just that.
