I think they generally provide short term relief for bad knots and things
They work for general muscle soreness well but feel like a real massage is often needed for the bad stuff. But for sure help for a day or so in my experience.

Do those massage guns really work? I have a knot in a shoulder blade I really need to get gone.

Great relief on soft tissue. It can help work out the knots etc..
