accomplishments happened before current recruits were even born. You haven't been to a BCS game. You do not have an "elite" schedule this year. You aren't in a BCS conference. If you look at what a college team "needs" to be competitive, BYU is lacking in a lot of areas that you "need." Yet, they are still very successful. They have BCS facilities. They consistently sell out a 64K stadium. They get top recruits (Heaps, Hinds, etc). The reason why is the association with the Church. You will always get the Hinds and the Heaps. You will always have enough talent to carry the less-talented positions (for example, enough talent in the front seven defensively to cover for the corners). AND as long as Bronco is there, BYU should be disciplined enough to make up a little of the talent gap.
My point is, BYU is successful without any BCS help right now, and they will probably always be. If you do not make the top 64 conferences, will you compete for a NC or even a BCS game? Probably not, but (I'll even go with your line of thinking here) before this year, were you ever competing for a NC or a BCS game? Not really. That may change after this year, but probably not. IF the super conferences happen, and BYU is left out, it really won't change anything.
