I didn't hear his comments and don't know him so I
reserve judgement.
One thing to be sure about is that "fairly good standing" is likely not temple worthy - to your point. Although I think there could be other issues like simply drinking coffee or something like that. It may not have anything to do with orientation.
I don't know any who play for the other team who would suggest they were in even 'fairly good standing'. My guess is that it isn't what you suggest.
