This Is Not True
That's a little bit of a stretch there and I know he's just pocking fun. Here is the truth. BYU had been recruiting Tevi for sometime now but wanted him to get his grades up. Tevi worked on doing that over the past year. When he reached a 3.1- which is kind of on the bubble with a BYU offer- and made a visit to the campus, BYU extended an offer.

BYU had known about Sam Tevi for a long time. You see, Tevi's father Motukia Tevi was BYU Assistant Coach Steve Kaufusi's best man at his wedding, so to say that BYU discovered Tevi based on a Utah offer is a big, big stretch. Also, Coach Kaufusi is related to Sam Tevi's mother. Both served a mission in Tonga at the same time.

The evaluation process of BYU is very extensive and far more extensive than most other colleges. They don't just offer a prospect having learned about him from a message board then liking his film- See Jamal Morrow of Herritage HS, Cal as an example- or by simply seeing a talented prospect at the All Poly Camp much like Jonryheem Peoples. So there is no piggybacking here in the case of Sam Tevi because they've known and had evaluated him a long time ago. If they truly were, then the discovery of Tevi by BYU would have been made known by a Utah offer. However, this is not the case given the history of the two families. Also, because the recruiting process if far more extensive with the qualifications of a BYU offer being much different than one from other colleges, BYU simply doesn't piggyback anyone. They can't afford to make that mistake.
