there is a certain comfort level though when the bulk of your recruiting occurs
...within an hours drive of your home. I would imagine an assistant coach with some drive, creativity and imagination could put some work into networking with former Cougars playing in Europe, Asia, South America, etc, friends/members of the church living abroad, etc to report on interesting prospects in their areas and help the coaching staff cast a wider net.

Football coaches started doing that under Bronco and they started finding kids in areas of the country that BYU typically never gets kids from (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee etc.

Maybe lazy was a poor choice of words but I think as you alluded they have grown way too comfortable in their recruiting to mainly focus on their own backyard.
