Muguruza came back to win the next two sets to advance to the 2nd round over Townsend.
But there was a significant upset, with 5th seed Angelique Kerber (Germany) losing in straight sets to Anastasia Potapova (Russia). This isn’t a complete shock, as the French Open is Kerber’s weakest competition. But she was a quarterfinalist last year, so it’s not like she’s a complete hack on clay.
With Kerber out, 12th seed Anastasia Sevastova (Latvia) is now favored to make the quarterfinal round. And it strengthens the case for 2nd seed Karolína Plíšková (Czech Republic) to make it to the semifinals. Plíšková has never won a major, though she did win the Italian Open just a week ago.
