I couldn't believe how brutally long that distance was they had to cross @ parts
of Utah and Omaha. 2 football fields under MG42, 88, and mortar fire. All perfectly sited and dialed in months in advance. Even when you watch the footage from the landing craft, as they're casually walking off in later waves, you can see the rounds slapping the water all around the soldiers.Within 2-3 feet. They're totally chill, not speeding up pace at all, single file. I'd be zig zag running screaming "go, go go." The French really show a lot of love to Americans in that area, even now. Even younger generations. I have had people say they had relatives killed by US bombs. Caen, and some of the other cities were carpet bombed basically, but like Stalingrad, it just gave the Germans awesome places to hide and tens of thousands French civilians were killed. The end of WW2, VE and VJ day, is one fiesta I would've loved to participate in.
