If you really don't have a clue about the big picture stuff, especially the permitting, might be best to get a general. Most subs can and should pull their own permits, but you'll need to get the building permit and make sure everything is moving along.

There are also a lot of things that can fall through the cracks, or tasks that don't get included or done by each sub and either you have to do it yourself, or pay someone else to come do it for you. That's assuming you or someone else catches it.

If you're somewhat familiar with the whole process it can be done, but if you're doubting yourself already, I'd bet you'll wish later you had just hired a GC.
