Their racism, imperialism, and brutality is almost always whitewashed, or briefly mentioned and moved along, even though there’s a very strong argument they were the worst actor in WW2 and it’s not particularly close. But they have “different values” (almost always painted in a positive light), you can’t judge them lest you be racist in doing so. Carlin’s very extensive podcast on WW2 Japan makes 10x more mentions of Western supposed racism against the Japanese than their actual ideologically rooted racism that informed their own policies.
Of course the fact that they were nuked changes the moral dynamic also. They were the losers and they took their medicine. And the Chinese aren’t the Jews, with 1/100 the relevance and cultural sway in the West to hammer the message home.
