I wouldn’t overthink it. Ultimately, you wander around the mountains looking
for game.

That said, the more time you spend wandering (in and out of season) the more you become familiar with where they hang out. Study elk and understand where they go, what their daily (and yearly) routine is like, and become familiar with your local hunting area including trail and road access.

Watch some YouTube videos on how to clean an animal and get a good knife and some warm clothes. 6.5 Creedmoor is a little light for elk unless you’re very confident with your shooting abilities. Why not get a .308 or 30-06? Tried and true and lots of ammo available.
