So, whatever sounds make it onto the radio were most likely popular in the underground scenes several years prior. I totally get why "hipster" is a derogatory term, but there's no question that people who closely follow something (art, music, movies, etc.) are probably going to find some amazing talent that won't be found by people who aren't following as closely.
