As head coach? BM’s worst seasons were 7-6, 6-6 years. And now CB is talking about that sort of record as being the ceiling for Sitake’s team next year.
As DC? Not even close. BM is an X’s and O’x wizard who has studied with various NFL teams during the off seasons. In 2012 with broke-back Riley QBing that awful offense BYU still had a top 5 defense in the entire nation.
As recruiter? Seems like Sitake is better at projecting talent, and actually likes to recruit, but even he can’t close the deal cause his team sucked so bad. We’ll see how all his transfers pan out, but so far the ranking of his recruiting classes isn’t any better than Bronco’s, and BYU still seems to be signing a lot of 2* without many other offers.
S&C? When BYU had all those injuries in 2014, Bronco went and hired a new staff with more modern training techniques. After all the injuries this past season, Sitake doubled down on this staff with their more old school Olympic lifts approach. We’ll see how that works out.
Coaching tree. Sitake doesn’t seem to have a significantly better network than BM. He hired a ton of inexperienced coaches and staff when he first started. I am optimistic about the revamped staff, but time will tell if BYU can get back to even Anae’s level of offense.
Discipline and effort? Not even close again. BM demands excellence and gets it from his players in these areas. Sitake on the other hand...
PR? Well, Sitake goes out of his way to praise the fans, so that’s nice. But he threw the offensive coaches under the bus every week in a way we never saw BM do. When the going gets tough, Sitake handled things far less gracefully than BM.
I hope Sitake grows from this past season and improves as a head coach. I do like him as a person, and would love to seem him succeed at BYU. But I thought he was a very risky hire at the time, and so far he has proven to be an absolute downgrade from Bronco Mendenhall.
