Not to take anything away from what Monson did, he was great. I have always thought that Fitzgerald built the program into something more than what it was before him.
Fitzgerald hired Monson and Few and convinced the administration for Monson to succeed him instead of looking outside. In part he told the administration one of the reasons they should promote Monson was because "You're so dumb, you'll hire the guy with the best tie."
He took the Gonzaga job for $18,000. (I know that was in 79 but still). He recruited John Stockton to the program. He figured out a way to out recruit UWashington, Washington State, Oregon, and Utah.
