I’ll take a stab at why Westbrook thought it was racial - blacks have been seen
as inferior for years and years. We obviously don’t need a history lesson on that. They have had to essentially kneel to a society that has seen them as lesser and unworthy of receiving some of the basic human rights one should enjoy. Things are obviously much better than it was, but I would think being black, knowing your history, and seeing what you perceive as injustice around you now can make you hyper-sensitive to any comment made that might have a remote twinge if racism to it.

Just like most CBers when they read a Trib headline “they are bigots!” we yell. Because of perceived injustices or false information we have felt in our lives, past and present.

So when Westbrook hears, “get on your knees like you have in the past”, while this could easily be seen as sexual enuendo, he is taking it as a white man telling him to get down on his knees, where he belongs. To me, if that was the guys intent (and that’s what was actually said), I think it is racist.

Add this to him probably hearing rumors from other black athletes who’ve played in Utah, that they have had racial slurs thrown at them before. And then the media, (and possibly him) most likely knowing that the LDS Church limited Blacks within their church fairly recently and many of those members also used to believe that being black was a curse (I’m LDS btw) all sets this up to people and Westbrook seeing this as not a sexual comment, but a racial one, being said by a white man, in a state - that to many - does not have the best record of social and racial acceptance and diversity.

I’m not sure what was really said, but taking everything into consideration, I don’t blame him for thinking that comment is racist.
