In the old days you could remove the battery after a car
Was started. It only was used to start the car. Now, for most vehicles a good battery is required at all times. It still could be just the battery.

Could be alternator or battery or both since one can lead to the other failing.

Usually last about 5 so very probable. You might be able to rent a tester from

I'd say alternator - given that's exactly what happened with a car of mine

Quick test would be to use a multimeter on the battery with the car running

Most likely the alternator has failed and the car ran off the battery voltage until it died.
