No and no. Just not time. And this was in the U.S. (Houston, Tx).
Decathlete would gain a good bit of weight, then would do a serious grapefruit cleanse and try to exercise more. Not much you can do when you get force-fed multiple meals a day in the south. BBQ brisket, etc. He was my comp for 4.5 months and we went to the track at 5:30 am for about two weeks in a row. We played b-ball at 5:30am for about a month with some less active high school kids to encourage them to be at the church for seminary. Definitely wasn’t a stellar workout. One of those small gyms with carpet court, so he wasn’t about to go all out and tear an ACL.
Tight End was an awesome guy (so was the decathlete), and he was so focused on the mission. He had some weights in his apartment that he’d use in the mornings. I threw a football with him one day at the mission office (we were all there after transfers to pick up mail). It was my own football and I don’t think he’d even caught a ball the whole time he was out. He did well after the mission and was in the NFL for a few seasons.
