It’s actually not scientists that are the problem
Many Data scientists completely disagree with the approaches being taken (particularly the interdisciplinary crew that consider economic impacts against the threat to life), but a very small group of scientists with a very narrow world view (CDC/public health wonks) are running the show with little to no consideration of the economic and social impacts. Even the increased incidence of suicide and domestic violence are not on their radar as their focus is exclusively on flattening the curve. Anyone who disagrees is being shamed into silence and Universities who fund many of said data scientists salaries are taking the hardest line by completely shutting down...even the dorm rooms are closed. So the rational skeptics put themselves at risk by questioning the public health zealots and you end up with a data vacuum.

Personally, I can’t believe we shut down our schools and economy for a virus that has a little to no impact on 60% of the population and we know exactly who the 60% are. We should be allowing low risk groups to get back to business as usual (building herd immunity among groups who are unlikely to ever need hospitalization) and then apply much more stringent rules for the high risk populations. Instead, we’re doing the worst thing possible. Having everyone self quarantine (especially kids and college age adults whose schools are all cancelled) so that the virus can’t spread to build up communal immunity, and then the higher risk populations are out and about to get groceries. It’s basically the opposite of what we should be doing.
