Matt was forced to the bench by Cleve much of his Jr year — when we had both Lyday & Whiting as backcourt options — but in the heat of the Conf battle teams started pressing us in the backcourt & neither Lyday or Whiting could take the heat, so Montague was inserted back in — & in fact played a lot from that point.
While Matt was easily a better ball handler than TJ & probably a better passer, TJ's far superior scoring probably made him a better facilitator overall. Maybe significantly better.
In regards to man defense, though, Montague is perhaps our most underrated backcourt player ever. He was a very hard guy for even an elite PG to shake. I give TJ a lot of credit for becoming a fierce & committed defender as a Sr — cuz he was a pretty poor defender his first 3+ seasons.
