RE: Sensory Processing Disorder
I have a 7 yr old who has Sensory Processing Disorder. He is a sensory seeker. My wife and I knew
something was wrong at a very early age. We got him into early intervention which was a lifesaver.
As a baby, he had to be wrapped up tight and feel pressure on him to be able to calm. He always had to
be bouncing, jumping, screaming, spinning, or just acting crazy. He has always been the worst sleeper.
I'm grateful for melatonin....to this day, the kid cannot calm down before bed without it!
Routine is needed with a child like mine. It has definitely been a challenge for me and my wife but we've
learned how to help calm him and how to give him the right amount of sensory stimulus that his body
and brain need to function.

When he was 3, we would have to do sensory therapy with him before he went to preschool. For a while
he wore a weighted vest to help him calm down. We've learned he loves the water and swimming is such
a calming influence. The trampoline is absolutely therapeutic to him as well. If you don't have a trampoline, get one.

My little one has always needed a noise machine to sleep. There is something so therapeutic to his brain to have
sound on while he falls asleep. A fan on all night also helps him to stay calm. Before him I didn't even know what
sensory processing disorder was.... I just figured he had some ADHD like many others... this stuff is no joke so
I feel for you. Hang in there!

What calms your son? What are his hobbies? Is he more of a sensory seeker or a sensory avoider?
