They come back. They know they are good but not NFL bound. Being realistic, they want to keep their scholarship, get their degree and get out. Then you throw in marriage and maybe kids. So, they do enough to keep their scholarships but they don't want to or can't spend the extra time to take them to the next level. So, besides the conditioning, motivation can actually be a negative with more mature players.
