My guess is certain government payments are being counted. And for your argument household median
income is a poor measurement because you are talking about salaries, so you really would need to look at median salaries to know if that's an issue. Utah has the youngest workforce and the fewest married couples both working per "capita". Here is a look at states by income if there is just 1 earner.
