They were recruited as high school kids.

High school kids love the flashy, popular items. Stanford is absolutely understandable from both an education and athletic background, as it is a great degree. BYU not being in a big conference has hurt them in getting the big recruits, and even players like Taysom chose the big school before going on a mission. With the Big 12 invite and the recent success, BYU is now winning more recruiting battles, than they are losing.
