In the long-term he is absolutely right.
Whenever I see the question of who I would cheer for if BYU cancelled its football program I feel the only likely answer is no one. I would lose all interest in the sport. It has already be relegated away form what it was. Even in the BCS era I watched 60-80% of the bowls games but now I watch BYU, usually half of the NC and maybe a couple quarters of other intriguing games when I see they are close. Part of that was growing up but the biggest part is college football, more than any other sport, has essentially doubled down on making sure inequality is encouraged not mitigated.

If the Big 10 and SEC try to form what the NFL is I will likely lose all interest if my team is left out. I suppose they might draw me back in if they found a way to make things more equal and create an intriguing post season but that is a big if.
