but in the field of play is that akin to running backwards? I get forward progress rules, but does that apply when the defender doesn’t push you back, you just willing pull the ball back?

I believe the rules are that is not a forward progress play, so the ball is placed where it is when he is ruled down.

That’s why you can’t judge based on the camera behind the play. The camera angle on the line showed it wasn’t close
