I've seen amateur photographers trying to get their name out there charge $100 for family photos--you can check Craigslist or a local college's website maybe. A professional in my ward did our (small) family pictures for $350 including them on a CD with copyright release. My family has done pictures before where a few of us took our digital cameras and we all shot pictures of different groups: grandkids, first generation, this family, that family etc. candid photos, and they turned out well and that was cheap obviously. I've had my kids' pictures done at Walmart and Sears and they turned out well, too. And I second Idahofallsblue, if you have a friend or two with a nice camera, just pay them for the battery/film or whatever or trade them something for their time and call it good.
