The only solution to your problem is to set loose numerous king snakes around
your house. Inside and out.
That will keep the rattlers away.

You killed it by stepping on it? Head shot?

Definitely a young rattlesnake.

at least 6 years old based on the rattles...not that young

The pic makes him look MUCH bigger than he was

Most rattlesnakes shed several times early in their life

2/17/14 3:59pm
He didn't even really have a rattle yet. He was pretty small, maybe 20 inches

If you look closely, you'll find that that yellow little rattle has quite a few

Not too young if it's a Massasauga. Its rattle size suggests it's not too young.

Right on it's head. It was still barely alive after I realized what happened

pegushin

Your home was obviously built on a snake nesting site.

It appears as if thats a Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus helle)
BE-WHY-YOU
2/17/14 4:10pm
It's difficult to tell from the pics, but it could be a Great Basin Rattlesnake.

2/17/14 4:26pm
My guess is it's a Massasauga...the 2nd tiniest rattler in the US.
Mantis Mutu
2/17/14 4:27pm
Rats! Don't live in Cali. They do live in Mexico, though.
Mantis Mutu

Smoke Monster

Mantis Mutu
2/17/14 4:32pm
my guess is a Northern Pacific Rattlesnake seen here:
laxcoug
2/17/14 4:33pm
