I think he did, I think coaches trusted him immensely...
...and afterwards he threw them under the bus by saying they should've known he'd never willingly take himself out of the game. I don't blame the coaches for getting caught up in the Riley charm and trusting him but they should've seen he couldn't play and had the courage to pull him. It was pretty clear in the first quarter of the Utah game that he was struggling physically, even the TV announcer commented on it.

As a former high school and DII college athlete I've suffered injuries and some pretty significant ones. As much as you want to go and compete, you also know when an injury has incapacitated you and your play is hurting the team. A leader should always put the team ahead of his own selfish desires. What Riley showed was how much he cared only about himself and how very little he cared about anyone else.
