If there is something in the practic routine that could account for it, maybe it's that the team is able to prepare and gameplan for the first two games of the season during fall camp. When it comes to the third game of the season, that's about the time that you are only relying on one week of game prep for the game. I don't know if this is something that is really an issue, though.

Personally, I believe a big part of the issue here has a lot to do with the opponents that we have played during that week. I haven't looked closely, but I'd be willing to bet that we tend to have played some of our tougher OOC opponents during week 3 back when we were in the MWC. As far as since independence, Utah has been the 3rd game of the season and I think they have just owned us in recent years.
