There have a been a few instances in which it is hard to find another
explanation. The most blatant I've ever seen was sometime around 2007 or so. West Virginia was ranked #2 and only had to beat a pretty pathetic Pitt team to play in the BCS title game. It was an ugly game, but Pitt was winning. Suddenly, Pitt started getting all kinds of phantom penalties, bad spots, insane no-calls, etc. They still ended up winning, but it's really hard to imagine that the officials just started making that many mistakes that all favored the conference's best chance to prove they were still relevant at a time that people were saying they weren't.
