It's safe and has done an excellent job preserving and developing its natural resources to attract tourism. Several people I know say it's the most beautiful place on earth. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is very nice as well. Caribbean cruises have a near cult following for offering exactly what you are looking for. Lots of options for tropical get aways.
